Merseyside and Cheshire NatWest branches now ‘autism-friendly’

Seven NatWest bank branches across Merseyside and Cheshire are now ‘Autism Friendly’ businesses following a training session carried out by a Merseyside social enterprise.

Staff from the bank took part in a workshop run by Autism Adventures as part of NatWest’s commitment to supporting customers from all walks of life. Autism Adventures is a social enterprise which aims to educate local businesses to help them offer a better service to those with autism and their families.

Speke-resident Julie Simpson, director of Autism Adventures, founded the organisation in May 2015 after campaigning to raise awareness of the condition. Her son Joe, 13, is autistic.

As part of her works she has provided staff at Liverpool One, Everton Football Club, Merseytravel and other organisations with training around awareness and how they can support customers with the condition.

Ms Simpson said: “Autism has no visual traits so a child may just act up out of nowhere due to any number of circumstances.

“When you are a parent and this happens, it can be incredibly challenging so knowing you are in a shop or business with staff that have undergone training is incredibly helpful.”

Last year Autism Adventures joined Spark Up – a 12-week business accelerator, delivered by Liverpool & Sefton Chambers of Commerce, with the support of NatWest.

At the end of the programme Ms Simpson received a £5,000 boost courtesy of NatWest for her pitch about her business.

Through her involvement with Spark Up, Julie met Heather Waters, regional enterprise manager at the bank. Ms Waters put forward the idea for NatWest branch staff to undergo the training.

The branches are located in Birkenhead, Widnes, Ellesmere Port, Chester, Aintree, Southport and Liverpool One.
